BOTOX and Dermal Fillers

What is Botox®?

Botox is an injection containing a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It’s the same toxin that causes muscle paralysis by botulism food poisoning, but the FDA approved has approved it in small doses to reduce:

  • Facial fine lines and wrinkles
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Lines in your nose
  • Chin dimpling
  • Underarm sweating

Botox is also used to help correct uncontrollable blinking, misaligned eyes, overactive bladder, and chronic migraines. Botox injections work by blocking signals from nerves to muscles in order to prevent muscle contractions that cause facial lines.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are another type of aesthetic injection Dr. Archer uses to help you achieve a more youthful appearance. Common ways fillers create youthful-looking skin are they:

  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Smooth lines around the mouth and nose
  • Restore volume to sunken temples or cheeks
  • Improve facial symmetry
  • Plump up the lips
  • Smooth chin creases
  • Rejuvenate skin on the hands
  • Diminish scars
  • Lift a downturned mouth

Examples of dermal fillers include Juvéderm® and Restylane® products. After a thorough consultation, Dr. Archer discusses which type of filler best matches your individual needs.

What happens during Botox and dermal filler injections?

Dr. Archer lets you know if you’re a good candidate for Botox, dermal fillers, or if a combination of both may give you the best possible results.

Botox

When receiving Botox, Dr. Archer injects botulinum toxin into various areas of your face. You may feel a slight pinch during injections, but Dr. Archer can use a topical anesthetic to enhance comfort if you’d like. The procedure takes just minutes to complete. Results from Botox injections may last 3-12 months, depending on the areas treated.

After the injections, you may experience slight swelling or bruising at the injection site or headaches, but these side effects are temporary. There is little to no downtime after the procedure. You’ll likely notice optimal results from Botox about 3-7 days after the injections after it has time to paralyze the nerves.

Dermal fillers

If dermal fillers are right for you, Dr. Archer injects them in various areas of your face, lips, or hands that need smoothing, plumping, or lifting. She uses topical anesthesia if you’d like, to maximize comfort.

You might notice improvements in your skin right after filler injections, but you may also experience mild bruising or swelling that can last several days. There is little to no downtime after the procedure. Dermal fillers may last 6-18 months or longer, depending on the product used and the area injected.
