Nose Surgery Q & A

What issues can rhinoplasty address?

Rhinoplasty, or “nose jobs,” use a variety of techniques to alter the appearance of the nose and the nostrils so the face appears more balanced and aesthetically pleasing. Procedures can be customized to address issues like the size of the nose, bumps in the bridge or upper portion of the nose, nostrils that appear too large or uneven, issues affecting just the tip of the nose, and a nose that appears too wide or too broad. Because the nose plays such a prominent role in the appearance of the face, rhinoplasty can often have a dramatic effect on the appearance of the entire face, and patients undergoing rhinoplasty often benefit from a high level of self-confidence.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

The specific techniques used during surgery will depend on which part of the nose is being addressed. Some surgical procedures depend on incisions made in the outer portions of the nose, typically along the side or bottom creases so any resulting scar will not be seen. In other cases, incisions may be made inside the nose where scars will be hidden. Once the underlying bone and cartilage are exposed, special surgical instruments will be used to gently reshape the nose, removing tissue as needed and then repositioning the skin and other overlying tissues to create the new shape of the nose. Most procedures take an hour or two to complete.

How will I feel following rhinoplasty surgery?

Once the incisions are closed, a bandage will be placed over the nose and gauze may be placed inside the nose temporarily. Splints are often used to support the nose in its new position during the very early stages of healing when the skin and other tissues are reattaching. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes can be treated with cold compresses and by keeping the head elevated for the first week or so, including while sleeping. The splint will be removed in about a week.
